Stratos Revolving Lounge

Abu Dhabi continues to impress me...well ok, not all the time.  But when I think I have seen the best of the well-known Abu Dhabi eateries, I happen to be impressed by yet another old standby that has managed to keep up with the times.  Le Royal Meridian hotel is home to Stratos the revolving steak house on the top floor.  Even with all those panoramic city and sea views, I am not really too sure how much I like rotating while I eat (even if you can barely tell you are moving),  but I do love the classy, retro (1920's) style decor.  With black, white and gold art deco prominence, it feels luxurious but also fun.  They have fantastic cocktails and mocktails, AND they host a fabulous mid-week ladies night.
If you come for dinner, you will sit at a dark wood table, with a white napkin and a dark leather placemat.  The thin gold cutlery enhances the art deco theme and Stratos has just launched a new menu as the management are always keeping things fresh and interesting.  The bread rolls are served warm with a mound of butter and the starters are generous.  The beet "carpaccio" was completely refreshing and satisfying with great flavor.
If you are a steak lover, you will be hard pressed to find a better cut of meat in the city.  While the presentation may not be all that fancy (no one will be bouncing salt off of their elbows for you), the meat speaks for itself...which, to me, is most important.  AND those chips!  Super thick-cut fries crispy and golden on the outside, tender and fluffy on the inside.  I only could have used another portion.
Not a steak lover?  There are other equally satisfying options like the roasted Sea Bass or the vegetarian Roasted Pumpkin and Carrot.  While I didn't try the Sea Bass the vegetarian option was surprisingly filling, decadently covered in pumpkin seed and basil pesto and creamy goat cheese.
We made so many jokes about waiting for the restroom to come around, or leaving your camera/phone on the window sill until it gets to your dining partner, but Stratos's revolving dining room is fun and they manage to pull it off with class and gusto.  So next time you a looking for a little something different, while not giving up a great dinner and/or drinks  Stratos is the place!
